Q: What is a jogger?

Bob Ironman Stroller

A: There are two styles of joggers:

  1. the common 3-wheeled stroller
  2. and the jogging stroller used for running.

Joggers have 3 wheels and as such are easier to maneuvre than the 4-wheeled stroller. Most joggers have the same features as their 4-wheeled counterparts, strollers.

Features include:

  • 5-point safety harness
  • Hood or sun cover
  • Adjustable handlebar
  • Under seat storage basket
  • Adjustable reclining seat
  • Caddy/tray/drink holder
  • Accessories

Types of Jogger

General Use Jogger

The popular jogger or common 3-wheeled stroller is a favourite for the ease of use with one-hand, easy to push and easy to steer. Leading brands and models include:

  • Baby Jogger City Series
  • Jeep Liberty Series
  • Love'n'Care Trixi and Europa
  • Mountain Buggy Urban Series, Terrain, Breeze
  • phil&teds Classic, Explorer
  • Quinny Buzz, Zapp, Speedi
  • Valco Baby Latitude, Ion, Tri Mode, Matrix

Jogging Stroller

A true jogger, jogging or running stroller has three large fixed wheels or lockable swivel front wheel, pneumatic tyres (16" or 20"), shock absorbers, handbrake, adjustable handlebar, padded 5-point safety harness and lightweight frame. If the jogger you are looking at does not include these features then it is merely a 3-wheeled stroller and not suitable for running with baby on board.

a baby should be at least 8 months old before riding while you run

There are a number of brands and models of joggers on the market that are true running strollers. With the identifying features as listed above you only need to use your personal judgement when choosing a jogger to run with baby.

NB. For jogging, a baby should be at least 8 months old before riding while you run. This recommendation is based on your baby being able to hold their head up and not take the bumps from the terrain on their little baby heads.

4WD Analogy

Think of joggers like the popular 4WD vehicles on the road today. Most all of the vehicles that are called 4WD are really "soft-roaders" or "crossovers" that are not actually desgiend for true off-roading. They are AWD (all-wheel drives) comprising higher ground clearance, better grip and stability with a robust design compared to a sedan, but not good off-road. A true 4WD however is a serious off-roader. They are bigger in all areas: size in both passenger and storage space, engine power and load capacity. Compare a Ford Explorer or Honda CR-V with a Toyota Landcruiser or Nissan Patrol!

All strollers sold in Australia must comply with the Pram and Stroller Safety Standard AS/NZS 2088:2009.
